The Old Royal Naval College (ORNC) - along with other key visitor attractions - is part of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site. 

In 1972 the world’s countries agreed to identify, protect and promote the most important historical and natural places on earth for future generations. This process is managed by UNESCO (the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation), whose World Heritage Committee of experts meets once a year to decide which sites can be inscribed as World Heritage Sites.

To be included on the World Heritage List, sites must meet a number of criteria within the overall requirement to be of ‘outstanding universal value’. By 2009 the World Heritage List included almost 900 sites: 689 cultural, 176 natural and 25 mixed properties.
