One of many innovative performances held at the ORNC during the annual Greenwich + Docklands International Festival

Our charity

The Old Royal Naval College (ORNC) in Greenwich is one of the most important ensembles in European baroque architecture and the centrepiece of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site. Today this historic landmark is open to the public and, since the departure of the Royal Navy in 1997, is managed by the Greenwich Foundation, a registered charity.

What we do

The ORNC is one of the top 20 visitor attractions in the UK and welcomes over 1.8 million visitors a year to its free attractions - the Discover Greenwich Visitor Centre, Painted Hall and Chapel.

Every year over 8,000 schoolchildren take part in inspiring workshops, 80 musical events are performed in the Chapel, and over 60 weddings and 50 filming and photography shoots are held at the ORNC.

Our charity manages all these activities, looks after 17 acres of grounds, carries out over 10,000 hours of conservation annually, and collaborates closely with our site partners.

Our mission

is to conserve Sir Christopher Wren’s twin-domed riverside masterpiece for present and future generations; to provide full access to the ORNC, so that a wide and diverse audience may enjoy and share its significance.

Our vision

is to be a beacon for conservation, innovation and creativity at the heart of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site.

Our aims

We will conserve the buildings, interiors and grounds of the ORNC to the highest standards, so that all may enjoy them.

We will delight our visitors, create a feeling of ownership in the local community, and offer a programme of events and learning opportunities.

We will build a sustainable future by broadening income streams through commercial and fundraising activites, cost-effectiveness and responsible environmental management.

Our future

As a charity, we need your support. With our core grant from the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) now reducing year on year, we are continuously seeking ways to build a financially sustainable future and safeguard this internationally important asset.

There are many ways you can contribute: make a donation, become a volunteer, join our ORNC Angels or attend an event.
