To celebrate Greenwich becoming a Royal Borough, Greenwich Council will be holding a Royal Weekend with free activities throughout the day and with a host of events taking place at the Old Royal Naval College (ORNC) on Sunday 5 February 2012. Join in with the celebrations and listen to live music and re-enactment performances on the King Charles Lawn at the ORNC. Watch a spectacular lantern procession and a musical fireworks display from the river, bringing the weekend to a close.
Free events at the ORNC include:
Discover Greenwich late opening and exhibit
Venue: Discover Greenwich Visitor Centre
Event times: 10.00 – 19.00
The Discover Greenwich Visitor Centre will be open late until 19.00 with the opportunity to see the Royal Charter and Letter Patents, confirming the borough’s royal status and signed by The Queen.
Musical and re-enactment performances
Venue: King Charles Lawn and Discover Greenwich Visitor Centre
Events times: 14.00 – 18.00
Join in with the celebrations and listen to live music and re-enactment performances on the King Charles Lawn at the ORNC. Line up to be confirmed.
Painted Hall talk
Venue: Painted Hall
Event times: 11.30 – 11.45
Join our Yeomen Guide for 15-minute talk about the Painted Hall.
Meet James Thornhill
Venue: Painted Hall
Event times: 12.00, 13.00, 14.30, 15.30
Meet the creator of the amazing interior of the Painted Hall, Sir James Thornhill, the first English artist to receive a knighthood. Hear about his influences, his techniques and his rivals and just why it took 19 years to complete his masterpiece. Suitable for all the family.
Crown making – fun family event
Venue: Clore Learning Centre, Discover Greenwich Visitor Centre
Event times: 14.00 – 16.00
Make a crown fit for a king or queen. Drop in with your family and create your own crown to take home with you. Drop in session. Suitable for all ages.
Tactile Rug Talk
Venue: Painted Hall
Event times: 12.30, 13.30, 15.00
Touch our innovative tactile rug to find out about the characters on the ceiling of the Painted Hall. Suitable for all ages and for visually impaired visitors.
Lantern Procession
Venue: Grand Square
Event times: 17.30 – 18.00
Watch a children's lantern procession leave the National Maritime Museum at 17.30 and end at the Old Royal Naval College on Grand Square.
Fireworks display
Venue: Thames River Path and King Charles Lawn
Event times: 18.00 – 18.15
Watch the weekend’s grand finale, a spectacular musical fireworks display from the river.
