More than half a century after the last conservation works were undertaken, the accumulation of grime and the emergence of cracks mean that work is again required to stabilise and clean the surfaces, gently restoring their appearance to their former glory.

Over the past two and a half centuries, the paintings have seen no less than ten restorations, with 22 restorers leaving their mark on the fabric. The most recent were conducted by restorers from the Ministry of Works between 1957 and 1960.

Now it is our turn to bring our contribution to the preservation of this unique work. The task is huge: 28,115 square feet of oil paintings will need to be conserved, in four phases, over a number of years. The first phase will focus on the large west wall in the upper hall, showing King George I and his family, which is the area in most urgent need of attention.

Thornhill’s payment for his work in the Painted Hall was calculated at £3 per square yard for the ceiling and £1 per square yard for the walls.

Today, the conservation of the west wall is estimated to cost £675 per square yard – or £75 per square foot.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded us a development grant of £29,000 so that we can work up plans to apply for a full grant of £335,000 for the first phase of the conservation programme. 

But we still need additional support. By funding the conservation of at least one square foot of painting, you will ensure that this magnificent work of art is preserved for the understanding and enjoyment of future generations.
