Amount required to
‘Adopt a Lantern’

Until June 2016 the ORNC has a unique opportunity to double the value of your endowment plus gift aid through the Catalyst pledge we were offered from the Department for Culture Media and Sport (DCMS) and the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF). Therefore a total gift of £10,000 (with gift aid) would become £19,250 with the endowed matched funding.

The ORNC has 120 historic lanterns around the grounds, many dating back to the
19th century when Philip Hardwick was Surveyor of the Fabric. Individualy designed, mirroring the naval iconography of the site: anchors, tridents, sails, cannons and cannon balls, the lanterns haven’t been restored for many years.

A recent condition survey showed that each one is in a slightly different state of disrepair and needs individual treatment. Therefore a comprehensive programme of conservation has just begun and will continue throughout the next few years.

Due to the unique and labour intensive nature of the restoration, the current average cost of restoring one lantern is £4600. However once rehung and subject to adverse weather conditions the lantern will require on-going cleaning as well as future restoration.

Income from an endowment gift of £5,400 would provide the necessary funds to carry on this vital work.

Adopt a lantern today or contact the Development Department on 020 8269 4742 or email for further information.
