Sir James Thornhill’s Painted Hall is one of the jewels in the Old Royal Naval College crown, but what of the man beyond Greenwich?

From his Dorset origins to his lifelong connections, including Thornhill Park, his role as an MP, work at Sherborne House to his obelisk to George II and Queen Caroline, Thornhill expert Jeremy Barker will explore the greater works of Sir James.

Jeremy Barker
Jeremy Barker read history at Cambridge and was subsequently Junior Fellow at Loyola University, Chicago and has held Schoolteacher Fellowships at both the Queen’s College, Oxford and Warwick University. He has spent his career teaching history but always with the history of the art in parallel.

As a founding Trustee of Sherborne (which has one of the few surviving staircases painted by Sir James Thornhill) he was commissioned by the Trust to research the life and work of the painter.
