The Old Royal Naval College, Greenwich, Sir Christopher’s Wrens jewel on the River Thames has received a Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence award.

The award honours excellence in hospitality and is given to establishments that receive consistently positive reviews on tripadvisor.com.

The ORNC appears in the top 100 things to do in London and has been described as ‘superb’ and ‘beautiful’ by a number of visitors on the website. Marc Charron, President of Tripadvisor for business said “The Certificate of Excellence award gives top performing establishments around the world the recognition they deserve, based on feedback from those who matter most – their customers.”

The Old Royal Naval College designed by Sir Christopher Wren in 1696 was built to house old retired Seamen. Now the ORNC has rapidly become established as one of Europe’s leading visitor attractions, which welcomed over 1.8 million visitors last year. “We are delighted to receive a Tripadvisor Certificate of Excellence award” said Sarah Duthie Public Engagement Director at the Greenwich Foundation, the charity which runs the ORNC “I am so pleased visitors have taken the time to review us online and I hope it will encourage more to come and visit the Old Royal Naval College including our main attractions the magnificent Painted Hall and beautiful Chapel.”

Visitors on Tripadvisor.com have particularly referenced Thornhill’s masterpiece – the Painted Hall which underwent restoration work on the West Wall and Upper Hall ceiling last year. It has proved very popular especially as visitors were able to get up close to the paintings and walk along scaffolding while the restoration works were taking place. The Painted Hall is open daily for free and the ORNC offer a number of tours and talks where visitors can learn all about Thornhill's great work.
