November 2015 | Andrew Thompson The Old Royal Naval College (ORNC) celebrated the 340th birthday of Sir James Thornhill by recreating the ceiling of his great masterpiece, the Painted Hall. The giant paint-by-numbers canvas on display in the Painted Hall. The giant 2.5m canvas featuring over 7,500 shapes depicts the ceiling of the Painted Hall, which is about to undergo its biggest transformation since it was created over 300 years ago. Visitors to the ORNC were invited to celebrate the magnificent Baroque style of Sir James Thornhill through this collaborative project, which also launched the ORNC's Future Fund appeal. Hundreds took part in the event and the giant picture took almost a week to complete. We hope that inviting members of the public to join us in celebrating the work by helping us to complete Europe’s biggest paint-by-numbers will bring people closer to Thornhill’s masterpiece." “This celebration comes at a crucial time for the ORNC as we kick off the next phase in our conservation work which will enable millions of people to continue to enjoy the Painted Hall for years to come.” The completed canvas will be on display in the undercroft beneath the Painted Hall until the end of August.
