February 2014

The Painted Hall is visited by hundreds of thousands of visitors each year, and wear and tear is inevitable. Skilled stonemasons have now finished repairing damage to some of the marble steps that had been in need of attention.

Conservators had to be careful to remove only the damaged parts of the marble as we always try to keep as much of the original stone as possible.

Sourcing the correct marble was challenging as the patterns and colour of the stone have to be so similar to the original marble steps next to it. A sample recently received from the Bardiglio quarry is exactly this colour and character, so it was a perfect match for the repair.

The marble conservation was done by skilled stonemasons earlier in February and the repairs are virtually invisible, unless you are trying to spot them.
