Role Description:  Painted Hall Project Volunteer - Above Deck Explainer


The Old Royal Naval College (ORNC) is undertaking the second phase of a major conservation of the Painted Hall, supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF), from October 2016 – January 2019.

We will be conserving and restoring the vast lower hall ceiling, one of the most ambitious conservation projects currently happening in Europe. As part of this exciting two-year project, we are offering the opportunity to become a Painted Hall Project Volunteer. 

Time commitment

1 day a week for 6 months. Some weekend hours will be required on a rota system, and availability to attend all training dates prior to commencement of tours which will start from mid-March 2017.

Main Purpose

Working as part of the project team, you will act as key personnel for the conservation project and ensure that visitors to the Painted Hall have an enjoyable, interesting and safe visit. Visitors will have the once in a lifetime opportunity to take part in Painted Hall Ceiling Tours which will take them right to the top of the Observation Deck enabling them to get up close to such a unique project. 

We are looking for enthusiastic and committed volunteers to lead those ceiling tours and engage diverse audiences in the conservation process. You will assist the visitor experience department throughout the project in the day to day operations required to manage and deliver their public ceiling tours.

Key Tasks

  • To attend a series of training sessions to prepare you for the role, and maintain and attend regular ongoing training as part of the role
  • Become familiar with and then follow the ORNC’s Health and Safety Policy at all times
  • Deliver hour long scaffolding tours in a lead capacity and or support capacity to an advertised and agreed timetable
  • Direct visitors to start of tour area and help preparation of each tour
  • Welcome visitors to the Painted Hall
  • Answer visitor queries
  • Engage and share knowledge with visitors about the project
  • Encourage visitors to interact with resources
  • Communicate key fundraising messages to visitors
  • Support heritage craft skills activities
  • Stay up to date with project developments
  • Carry out visitor surveys for the evaluation of the project

Training and Support

Full induction and comprehensive training programme

Travel costs of up to £10 per day will be reimbursed based on return tickets/Oyster card receipts £3.50 towards lunch for a five hour shift or more.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Experience

  • Have an interest/enthusiasm for history and/or history of art
  • Interested in working with a wide variety of people


  • Ability to present to an audience and keep to time limits
  • Reasonable level of fitness as several flights of stairs to be accessed
  • Enthusiastic approach and interest in the aims and objectives of the project
  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Conscientious and punctual
