Background The Painted Hall at the Old Royal Naval College (ORNC) Greenwich is undergoing a major transformation over the next two years. This early eighteenth century baroque masterpiece was painted by Sir James Thornhill and has been described as the ‘Sistine Chapel of the UK’. The project includes conservation to the building and its artworks and a reworking of how visitors experience the Painted Hall and the site as a whole.

Purpose We’re looking for volunteers to join our friendly team and guide our decision making so that we can ensure the ORNC is a fully accessible and inclusive environment that enables all visitors to enjoy and engage with its art and heritage.

Role description

The Access Advisory Panel will work to improve physical, intellectual and sensory access within the Painted Hall and the site as a whole. Over the next two years the Panel will work with particular emphasis on the HLF funded Painted Hall Project, focusing on developing accessible display materials, wayfinding and learning resources.

Time commitment

We are looking for people who can:

  • Attend quarterly panel meetings, each lasting 2 hours
  • Undertake small amounts of research outside these meetings
  • Commit to the project for at least one year
  • Upcoming meeting dates:
    • Wednesday 14 June 2017, 15:00 – 17:00
    • Wednesday 13 September 2017, 15:00 – 17:00
    • Wednesday 6 December 2017, 15:00 – 17:00
    • Wednesday 14 March 2018, 15:00 – 17:00


  • Your contributions will help us make essential changes to ensure that the ORNC and its stories are accessible to more visitors than ever before
  • Invitations to a wide variety of social and behind-the-scenes events, trips and talks
  • Opportunities to learn more about painting conservation and meet a wide range of specialists involved in the project

Skills and experience

We’re looking for people who:

  • Have lived experience of disability
  • Have an interest in the arts, culture and heritage
  • Are happy to share their opinions and ideas with others in a group situation

Training and support

  • Full induction to the ORNC and the Painted Hall Project
  • Travel costs of up to £10 per day reimbursed
