Standing proudly inside the entrance to the King William Undercroft, an obelisk, designed and created by the 2017-18 students on the Banker Masonry course at the Building Crafts College, is now on permanent display.

Creating an interesting focal point for visitors, the stone sculpture (taking over 3 months to create) represents stability, with carvings inspired by the Painted Hall. The constellations carved into the stone reflect the seafarer’s ability to steer by the stars.

We’re very excited to showcase the sculpture when we officially reopen the Painted Hall in March. Keep in touch for more updates.

The project to create the obelisk was supported by the Worshipful Company of Masons.
