Who we are

By Old Royal Naval College and our subsidiaries “we” mean:

The Greenwich Foundation, registered charity number 1062519

The Greenwich Trading Company, registered company number 3340541

The Greenwich Trading Company carries out the following commercial activities: functions and banqueting, catering and retailing. As a wholly owned subsidiary, the Trading Company is subject to the Greenwich Foundation’s policies and procedures.

The Old Royal Naval College is Sir Christopher Wren’s riverside masterpiece: a famous British landmark which encompasses some of the finest buildings in the world. We bring this spectacular site alive by revealing pivotal events in British history and working creatively with our partners.

The Greenwich Foundation and/or the Greenwich Trading Company are the data controller(s) of your personal information.

Visitors to our digital channels

When you visit we collect standard internet log information and details of visitor behaviour patterns. We do this to find out things such as the number of visitors to the various parts of the site, to compile statistical reports on website activity and to personalise our visitors’ experiences of using the site.

Every time you log on to our website your IP (Internet Protocol) address registers on our servers. Your IP address reveals no information other than the number assigned to you. We do not use this technology to access any personal data against your knowledge or free will (for example, automatically recording the e-mail addresses of visitors). Nor do we use it for any purpose other than to help us monitor traffic on our website, or (in the case of criminal activity or misuse of our information) to cooperate with law enforcement.

Our free Wi-Fi service

Free Wi-Fi access is available at the Painted Hall via the Painted Hall Wi-Fi network (Blackbx). If you access the free Wi-Fi network, you will be asked to agree to the Old Royal Naval College’s Wi-Fi terms and conditions of use, which provide information about how your data will be used.

We use a number of different cookies on our site. Read our cookie policy here.

People who use and support our services

The main purposes for which we collect and process the details of customers, staff, visitors, members, service users, enquirers, donors and potential donors are:

  • To provide the service, goods or information requested
  • For administration purposes, e.g. to administer donations, pledges or membership commitments. This could include processing Gift Aid and ensuring gifts are acknowledged appropriately
  • To gather feedback
  • To conduct research to better understand what will be of interest to you and to ensure that any communications we may send you about fundraising are appropriate. This may include geo-demographic data and measures of affluence, collated solely from publicly available sources. This is to reduce the risk of unwanted or untimely approaches, and to make sure that we use our resources in the most efficient way
  • To undertake data analysis and segmentation. As part of this, we may analyse personal information collected from you, and occasionally from third parties, to create a profile of your interests and preferences so that we can contact you in the most appropriate way and with the most relevant information. We may use your data to contact you from time to time by post and email with news and information about the Old Royal Naval College that we feel may be of interest to you, such as research, education and fundraising, about our events, conservation, activities, products and services. We will not use your personal information for such marketing purposes if you have indicated that you do not wish to be contacted
  • To undertake due diligence exercises and to protect our reputation
  • To ensure that information held on supporters and friends is up to date and accurate where necessary

Data will be kept no longer than deemed necessary for the fulfilment of the above purposes.

Subscribing to email newsletters and other marketing communications is optional. You do not need to subscribe to marketing from us when you buy products, book tickets, donate, or use any other of our services.

We do not share, sell or swap personal data with third party organisations.

If you apply to work or volunteer at the Old Royal Naval College, we will use the information you supply to us to process your application and to monitor recruitment statistics. Where we want to disclose information to a third party, for example where we want to take up a reference or obtain a ‘disclosure’ from Disclosure Scotland or the Disclosure and Barring Service, we will not do so without informing you beforehand.

Personal information about unsuccessful candidates will be held for 6 months after the recruitment exercise has been completed, after which it will be destroyed, unless you have asked us to destroy it earlier or allowed us to retain it for longer by written request.
