ORNC Skittle Alley Volunteer


The Old Royal Naval College (ORNC) is one of London’s most famous riverside landmarks. Sir Christopher Wren’s twin domed masterpiece attracts over 1.7 million visitors a year and is in the top 11 visitor attractions in London. Areas open daily free of charge include the Painted Hall, the Chapel and Visitor Centre. 


You will help the Visitor Experience Department in the day-to-day running of our front of house services. You will be mainly based in our Victorian Skittle Alley to ensure all visitors have the best possible experience. Tasks include welcoming, helping and engaging with visitors in conversations about the Skittle Alley explaining why it was built and what it was used for.  You will also show visitors how to use the alley safely and help them play Skittles.

Time commitment

Minimum of three months required, Sunday lunches and some sessions during school holidays


 You will have the chance to :

  • Be a valued member of a Visitor Experience team at a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Develop professional skills in communication and customer service.
  • Gain experience in working with people of different ages and backgrounds.
  • Bring to life the stories of the ORNC and its history for all visitors.


You will:

  • Welcome the public and engage them in the Skittle Alley’s history.
  • Answer visitor questions and provide excellent customer service.
  • Show visitors how to use the Skittle Alley safely.
  • Collect visitor feedback about their visiting experience.
  • Proactively encourage cash donations and promote Gift Aid.
  • Offer information on and promote the attractions, exhibitions, events and facilities on site.
  • Talk to visitors about the Painted Hall conservation project.
  • Help out in other areas if and when needed.


 We are looking for people that:

  • Enjoy meeting and talking with a range of different people.
  • Can make history fun and exciting for visitors.
  • Are dedicated to providing excellent customer service.
  • Are excited about history and/or history of art!

Please note: This is a physical activity and requires a level of agility in order to manually replace the Skittles.

Training and support

  • ORNC induction and project induction session
  • Travel costs of up to £10 per day will be reimbursed based on return tickets/Oyster card receipts
  • £3 towards lunch for a five hour shift or more
