Join our team of volunteers, build your public-facing skills and engage people with the fascinating history, art and architecture of Sir Christopher Wren's riverside masterpiece.

Gain skills and experience at a cultural destination, become part of a friendly team, and learn about the history of the Old Royal Naval College, sharing your enthusiasm with our visitors.

Volunteers are a fundamental part of the Old Royal Naval College's team, and we work to support and enrich our volunteers throughout their time with us. We were recently awarded the Investing in Volunteers standard for our exceptional level of volunteer management and quality of volunteer experience.

The Old Royal Naval College takes the provision of a safe environment for children and vulnerable adults extremely seriously, and knowledge and understanding of best practice and legislation around safeguarding is essential.

Volunteer Today

We will be recruiting from November 2018 for volunteers to help us prepare for our grand reopening of the Painted Hall in March 2019, which has undergone extensive conservation of the lower hall ceiling and vestibule. There is in addition a new undercroft entrance with café and interpretation gallery. We will be looking to recruit a variety of roles including met and greet, interpretation and family ambassadors as well as tour guides and explainers. Please sign up on the page below to our waiting list and we will be in contact in late autumn 2018

What will you be doing?

  • Training to build your confidence and your understanding of our work. This includes:
    • Ways to engage with our visitors
    • An introduction to the history of the Old Royal Naval College
    • How to give effective talks and handling sessions
    • How to ask for donations
    • How to assist young learners and families
  • Opportunities to meet other volunteers and staff members at social events
  • Advice and hands-on experience working for a busy and creative heritage organisation and support in your development, including references where applicable.
