Volunteer Today

Why volunteer at the ORNC?

  • Volunteering with us is a great way to gain skills and experience, especially if you want a career in the museum or heritage sector.
  • Love to meet new people? Volunteering at the ORNC is brilliant for meeting others and becoming part of a welcoming and friendly team.
  • We are passionate about the history of the ORNC and as a volunteer you can share your enthusiasm with our visitors.

What will you be doing?

As a volunteer at the ORNC you may support all departments from front of house to back of house depending on your skills and interests.

  • Be the public face of the ORNC and assist our visitor experience team in providing a warm welcome; informative and enjoyable visit
  • Engage with our visitors and learn more about the history and work of the ORNC by giving talks, running object handling sessions and carrying out research
  • Support our fundraising team and help us to raise donations to keep the ORNC free and secure its future
  • Assist our learning and interpretation team in delivering family events and learning programmes for adults and young learners
  • Provide behind-the-scenes office support and work on projects with the marketing and events, learning and interpretation, security, fundraising and visitor experience teams

How will we support you?

As a volunteer you will be supporting the Greenwich Foundation, a charity responsible for looking after and maintaining public access to Sir Christopher Wren’s breath-taking buildings at the ORNC. Our team will aim to ensure that you get the most out of your time volunteering with us.

We will provide:

  • Interview practice through an informal talk when you start at the ORNC
  • A training programme to build your confidence and give you an understanding of our work including: ways to engage with our visitors; an introduction to the history of the ORNC; how to give effective talks and handling sessions; asking for donations in support of the ORNC; how to support young learners and families and much more.
  • Opportunities to meet other volunteers and staff members at social events
  • Advice and hands-on experience working for a busy and creative heritage organisation and support in your development, including references where applicable.

How do you apply?

As an ORNC volunteer, we would like a regular commitment. However, we can talk to you about what you can offer and hopefully fit around your schedule.

We regularly update our ORNC volunteer opportunities, so keep an eye out on our volunteering opportunities. If you would like to speak to someone about volunteering at the ORNC, email our Volunteer Co-ordinator at or call 020 8269 4794 and we will get back to you as soon as possible.
