Join our team of volunteers, build your public-facing skills and engage people with the fascinating history, art and architecture of Sir Christopher Wren's riverside masterpiece.

Gain skills and experience at a cultural destination, become part of a friendly team, and learn about the history of the Old Royal Naval College, sharing your enthusiasm with our visitors.

Volunteers are a fundamental part of the Old Royal Naval College's team, and we work to support and enrich our volunteers throughout their time with us. We were recently awarded the Investing in Volunteers standard for our exceptional level of volunteer management and quality of volunteer experience.

Volunteer Today

We are recruiting for Volunteers to help us deliver our Painted Hall Ceiling Tours to start in January 2018.  This is a wonderful opportunity to get involved in this unique project. Over the summer we have managed to delight over 28,000 people with a close up view of the Painted Hall Ceiling.

What will you be doing?

Volunteers are an important part of our team, working with all departments from front of house to back of house. As a volunteer, you might:

  • Assist our visitor experience team in welcoming and assisting visitors
  • Engage with visitors about the history of the Old Royal Naval College through talks, object handling sessions and research
  • Fundraise to secure the future of the Old Royal Naval College
  • Assist our learning and interpretation team in delivering our learning programme
  • Provide behind-the-scenes office support and work on projects with our communications, learning, interpretation, security, fundraising and visitor experience teams

How will we support you?

We strive to ensure that you get the most out of your time volunteering with us. We will provide:

  • Training to build your confidence and your understanding of our work. This includes:
    • Ways to engage with our visitors
    • An introduction to the history of the Old Royal Naval College
    • How to give effective talks and handling sessions
    • How to ask for donations
    • How to assist young learners and families
  • Opportunities to meet other volunteers and staff members at social events
  • Advice and hands-on experience working for a busy and creative heritage organisation and support in your development, including references where applicable.
